Motorized Control

With smart motorization, you can conveniently control your shades with a remote, your mobile device, automatically (through schedules you set in an app), or even with your favorite voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant.

In addition to added convenience, motorized shades help increase privacy and enhance security. You can schedule shades to adjust whenever you want, including scheduling them to open and close at set times, giving your home a lived-in look while you’re not there.

You can also capitalize on the energy efficiency you get from cellular shades. With motorization, you can schedule your shades to be in the best positions to block heat loss when it’s cold or keep out harsh rays in the summer. (Scheduling shades to automatically adjust is a lot easier than making sure you’re home to manually raise or lower them.)

Both styles of Hunter Douglas cellular shades—Duette® Honeycomb Shades and Sonnette® Cellular Roller Shades—are available with smart, motorized control, called PowerView® Automation.

Power options include battery wands, rechargeable batteries and wired systems (these use a direct source of electricity instead of batteries).

Frequently Asked Questions About Cellular Shades

Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, feature a distinctive structure of interconnected cells that trap air. This design provides excellent insulation—helping regulate indoor temperatures—and offers versatile light control. They’re available in various styles, colors, and opacities to suit both décor and functional preferences.

Privacy depends primarily on the fabric opacity you choose. Sheer or semi-sheer fabrics let in more light but offer less privacy, while semi-opaque or blackout options provide increased privacy and light blocking. The unique honeycomb design also helps reduce shadows and silhouettes from outside, enhancing overall privacy.

Cellular or “cell” sizes commonly range from small (around 3/8″ or 1/2″) to larger options (3/4″ or more). Smaller cells tend to look more proportional on small windows and deliver a sleek, minimal style. Larger cells can offer a bolder aesthetic and might provide a bit more insulation due to their greater volume of trapped air.

Yes. Cellular shades can be installed on most standard doors, including those with windows. An outside mount is typically used, and low-profile hardware or hold-down brackets can keep the shade in place when the door is opened or closed. Always check door handle clearance and measure carefully to ensure a proper fit.

For light cleaning, gently dust or vacuum the shades using a brush attachment. If there are stains or spots, use a mild soap-and-water solution on a cloth or sponge, taking care not to oversaturate the fabric. Some cellular shades can also be professionally cleaned with methods like ultrasonic cleaning, but check the manufacturer’s guidelines before using specialized techniques.
