Four families, and what each one is actually for
They all cover a window. They behave nothing alike once they are up, so here is the short version of each and where it earns its keep.
Shades →
One continuous piece of material that rolls, folds or stacks as it rises. The softest look of the four, and the widest range — eight styles from a sheer that glows in the afternoon to a blackout that holds a nursery dark at noon.
Blinds →
Individual slats that tilt, so you can aim the light without raising anything. Real basswood for warmth, faux wood or aluminium where damp and heat would warp timber — kitchens, bathrooms, south-facing rooms.
Shutters →
The only treatment that is joinery rather than fabric. Built into the opening, so it reads as part of the house and stays put for decades. The choice when you want the window itself to look finished.
Drapery & Curtains →
Fabric that softens the whole room, not just the glass. Where the other three are about light control, drapery is about how the room feels — and it is the honest answer for a very tall or very wide window.

Three or more windows meeting at angles, which is exactly why a bay rewards a proper treatment and punishes a lazy one. Every panel has to be measured to its own opening.
