Bay Window Blinds

Three or more windows meeting at angles — which is exactly why a bay rewards a proper treatment and punishes a lazy one.

Why It's Different

A bay is three windows at once

The geometry doesn't forgive guesswork. Every decision below follows from the angles.

  • 01The panes meet at anglesTreatments that sit flat on one window collide in a bay. Bracket depth and clearance at every joint decide what actually fits.
  • 02One opening or threeYou can dress each pane individually, or span the whole bay with drapery on a shaped track. The two read completely differently.
  • 03The sill is furnitureMany bays carry a window seat or a deep sill you actually use. Inside-mount shades keep it clear; long drapery gives it up.
  • 04Light arrives from three directionsThe same fabric reads differently on each face of the bay through the day, so we judge it in the room, not in a catalog.
What Works

Three ways to dress a bay

All three respect the angles. Which one is right depends on how the room uses the window.

Cellular & Roller Shades

One shade per pane, mounted inside the frame. The angles stay crisp, the seat stays usable, and every pane gets its own light control — see the shade range.

Why here: the cleanest look on a bay, and the most flexible day to day.

The soft option

Roman Shades

Fabric folds sized to each pane, warmer than a hard blind — and when they’re measured together, the folds line up across the whole bay. See our roman shades.

Why here: fabric warmth without giving up the sill.

Drapery on a Bay Track

Panels on a track bent to follow the bay, so the whole opening draws as one and the bay keeps its depth behind the fabric.

Why here: the grandest look, and the right one for a formal room.

What we'd steer you away from

A straight rod across the front

It’s the most common shortcut: one rod from corner to corner, cutting the bay off from the room. You lose the seat, the depth and the reason you paid for a bay window in the first place.

If you want fabric across the whole opening, a shaped track that follows the angles does it properly — and if you want the bay on show, shades fitted pane by pane keep every inch of it.

Questions

Bay window questions

The five that decide the design.

Send us a photo of the bay

One wide shot from across the room shows us the angles, the sill and the light. We'll tell you what we'd do with it.

What's the best window treatment for a bay window?

There is no single answer: shades fitted pane by pane keep the angles and the sill, while drapery on a shaped track dresses the bay as one opening. The right call depends on whether the room treats the bay as furniture or as a frame — that's what we work out at the consultation.

Should a bay window have one treatment or three?

Individual shades per pane give you separate light control and keep the window seat clear. One treatment — drapery on a bent track — reads grander and suits formal rooms. Both are correct; they answer different rooms.

Can you put blinds inside a bay window?

Yes. Inside-mount blinds and shades are measured pane by pane, with bracket depth checked at each angle so the treatments clear each other where the panes meet.

Do you make drapery for bay windows?

Yes — panels run on a track shaped to follow the bay, so they draw around the angles as one piece rather than hanging flat across the front.

How do you measure a bay window?

Each pane is measured individually, along with the angles between them and the depth of the frame. It's part of the free in-home consultation, and it isn't a job for a guess.
