Skylight Shades

A skylight is the one window you can’t reach. Everything about shading it — the tracks, the cells, the motor — follows from that.

Why It's Different

The ceiling changes everything

A skylight shade is not a window shade turned sideways. Four reasons it is its own system.

Motorized Hunter Douglas shades operated by remote in a living room
PowerView® motorization · how an out-of-reach shade gets used
  • 01It's out of reachDaily operation has to happen from the floor. In practice that means motorized — a shade that needs a pole and a ladder is a shade that stays where it is.
  • 02Gravity works against itA hanging shade droops the moment you tilt it. Skylight shades run in side tracks that hold the fabric flat against the glass at any pitch.
  • 03Roof glass is the hottest in the houseA skylight takes direct midday sun. The honeycomb cells that make cellular shades insulating earn their keep here more than anywhere.
  • 04Straight-down sun fades floorsThe patch of light under a skylight crosses the same floor and furniture every day. Filtering it is how the oak stays oak.
What Works

How we shade a skylight

One system, specified three ways — the tracks and the cells stay the same.

The system

Cellular in Side Tracks

A honeycomb shade running in slim tracks on all four sides, so the fabric sits flat against the glass whatever the pitch. The cells trap air — insulation where the house leaks most. Part of our cellular range.

Why here: made for the job — nothing adapted, nothing sagging.

Motorized, on a Schedule

PowerView® motorization runs the shade from a remote, an app or a schedule — closed against the afternoon heat before you get home, open again for breakfast.

Why here: an out-of-reach shade you actually use every day.

Light-Filtering to Blackout Cells

The same cell structure comes in semi-opaque fabrics that soften light and blackout fabrics that stop it — the difference between a glowing kitchen and a bedroom that sleeps in.

Why here: one system covers every room a skylight ends up in.

What we'd steer you away from

A standard shade tilted sideways

An ordinary roller or roman mounted on a sloped opening sags off the glass, gaps at the sides and still can’t be reached. It fails at every part of the job at once.

Skylights get purpose-made systems with side tracks and a motor, or they stay bare. There is no third option we’d put our name on.

Questions

Skylight questions

The five everyone asks about the window in the ceiling.

Don't get the ladder out

A photo from the floor tells us the size, the pitch and the system that fits. No measuring required on your end.

Can you put shades on a skylight?

Yes — with a purpose-made skylight system: a cellular shade running in side tracks that hold it flat against the glass, almost always motorized. It's a different product from a window shade, not the same one installed sideways.

How do skylight shades stay up?

Side tracks on the frame grip the edges of the shade, so the fabric stays flat against the glass at any roof pitch instead of hanging into the room.

Do skylight shades have to be motorized?

A skylight within arm's reach can use a manual system, but most aren't — and a shade that needs a ladder doesn't get used. Motorized operation from a remote, app or schedule is the honest default.

What's the best skylight shade for blocking heat?

Cellular honeycomb. The air trapped in the cells insulates the glass — and roof glass takes more direct sun than any window in the house, so the effect is bigger than on a wall.

Can a skylight shade be blackout?

Yes. Blackout cellular fabrics in side tracks darken a bedroom properly — the tracks close the light gaps an ordinary blackout shade leaves at its edges.
