A standard shade tilted sideways
An ordinary roller or roman mounted on a sloped opening sags off the glass, gaps at the sides and still can’t be reached. It fails at every part of the job at once.
Skylights get purpose-made systems with side tracks and a motor, or they stay bare. There is no third option we’d put our name on.

Can you put shades on a skylight?
Yes — with a purpose-made skylight system: a cellular shade running in side tracks that hold it flat against the glass, almost always motorized. It's a different product from a window shade, not the same one installed sideways.
How do skylight shades stay up?
Side tracks on the frame grip the edges of the shade, so the fabric stays flat against the glass at any roof pitch instead of hanging into the room.
Do skylight shades have to be motorized?
A skylight within arm's reach can use a manual system, but most aren't — and a shade that needs a ladder doesn't get used. Motorized operation from a remote, app or schedule is the honest default.
What's the best skylight shade for blocking heat?
Cellular honeycomb. The air trapped in the cells insulates the glass — and roof glass takes more direct sun than any window in the house, so the effect is bigger than on a wall.
Can a skylight shade be blackout?
Yes. Blackout cellular fabrics in side tracks darken a bedroom properly — the tracks close the light gaps an ordinary blackout shade leaves at its edges.
